Lewis Chessmen Knight Trinket Box

Discovered on the Isle of Lewis in 1831, the Lewis chessmen constitute some of the few complete surviving medieval chess pieces known today. This Lewis Chessmen Knight Trinket Box depicts one of the pieces of this set on its lid. This ornate trinket box is crafted from cold cast bronze and features intricate knotwork around the rim of the lid. On the red inset surface of the lid, a knight sitting on a horse is displayed holding a sword, designed after the knight in the Lewis chessmen set. Celtic knots cover the outer surface of the box itself as well, with panels of scrollwork and medieval symbols too.
