Horse Head Iberian Falcata

Sword Construction

Made from C60 high-carbon steel, this fully functional sword has a curved blade that curves down towards the tip, typical of the falcata sword. There is a second edge along the tip-half of the spine. Multiple narrow fullers run along the spine of the blade, lightening it for combat. At the base, the unsharpened blade widens back out meeting the hilt.

The hilt has a brass bolster that curves back towards the hilt on one side, forming a point. Intricate carvings adorn the bolster guard. Rivets secure two scales of bone to the full tang, creating the grip of the sword. The contour of the grip helps to maximize contact for empowering strikes and cuts, as well as making it less taxing to wield.

Then, the hilt ends with a brass horse-head pommel. It faces back towards the blade. A twisted section connects the blade and hilt on this side of the hilt. This curved, connected design helps to protect the hand.

Companion Knife and Scabbard

Finally, this sword comes with a knife and wooden scabbard. The knife has a similarly curved blade with a riveted bone hilt. Red leather covers the scabbard. The scabbard has a section for holding the knife on the side.

Next, the scabbard has a brass chape, throat, and bands. Two of the bands connect to three hanging loops, allowing the wielder to choose between a vertical or angled hang. We sell separately a range of buckle belts and ring belts that would look great with this sword.

Historical Info for the Falcata

This Carthaginian sword bases its design on a popular weapon on the Ancient Iberian Peninsula, especially during the Roman conquest of Hispania. Also, it was a particular favorite of the most famous Carthaginian general and enemy of the Romans, Hannibal, during the beginning of the conquest. The falcata was a powerful and hard-hitting sword of the classical world.
