This sword predates the typical basket hilt Irish swords, although the lack of a basket hilt does not make this Early Irish Hilt Sword any less effective or worthwhile. In fact, this sword remains a viable option thanks to its effective blade design. As is fairly typical of Irish swords, this weapon features a wide blade, effectively making it a broad sword. The blade is crafted from quality steel, although it is also left unsharpened. A wide fuller starts at the weapons guard and progresses down the length of the blade, gradually getting more and more narrow, ensuring that the waist of the blade is light while the leading edge of the blade remains properly weighted. The sword has relatively straight edges, although it does angle sharply at the tip to create an effective thrusting point. The steel cross guard features slightly twisted quillons, while the pommel is a classic wheel shape that is been hollowed out and set with a simple rod through the center. The swords grip is wrapped in black leather, which matches nicely to the included wood scabbard, which is also wrapped in leather and set with steel furnishings. The overall length of the sword is 42 inches. It might be Irish, but that should not stop any warrior from taking up this blade and calling it their own, as this Early Irish Hilt Sword is a great weapon to show off in battle or in your home as a fantastic display piece!

Pease note that I am giving this a good review with a couple of caveats. First lets get the bad news out of the way: If you thought “fully functional” meant that the blade is even a little sharp, dream on. You are going to wear out both your arms sharpening this. Just be glad it wasn’t actually dulled. That is actually a small issue, since no sane person expects to carry one of these things into battle. The more annoying issue, and one that has been noted many times with Deepeeka, is the scabbard fit. The first time I ordered this sword the effort take to draw or sheath the sword was impossible. This time it’s workable and well-made , but still tight and needing some adjustments. I might even try to build a more authentic flat-bottomed Irish scabbard.
Now the good news! This is a well-made sword. It is well balanced and much faster than it’s stats would lead you to believe. It is much less blade heavy than other arming swords. The hilt is faithful to the originals and is a beautiful s-shape design. Also, you will not find a better sword for the price. I recommend it.
