True to form, our Colichemarde Sword mirrors the Renaissance original with its extra-long, wide forte that abruptly tapers down to an acute point. The hilt features a decorative yet functional shell guard complete with finger loops. Its grip is completely wire wrapped and capped with a matching pommel. The Colichemarde emerged on the sword scene in the late 1600s during the decline of the rapier and the rise of the small sword. Its long suit was its uniquely shaped blade that was extra wide at the forte then stepped down or narrowed for the rest of its length before ending in a wicked point. The advantage of this configuration was it allowed the sword to be used to parry or oppose even the heaviest weapons without breaking, yet remain light and supple enough to take full advantage of its lightning quick point. Our president Lynn C. Thompson has long been an admirer of the Colichemarde due to its great versatility in attack or defense, so we enlisted the aid of our good friend Dave Baker and made our own modern interpretation. Feel just like a Renaissance duelist with this unique combat weapon in hand!

This sword is extremely light weight and nimble in the hand. However, the finger loops are quite small so this sword probably cannot be wielded by those with fat fingers or gloved hands. That being said, the craftsmanship is above par. For those who desire a martial weapon while still remaining suave and dapper, this sword will fill that role nicely. The grip is wire wrapped and provides a nice, positive surface for the bare hand without having any sharp points to worry about. Overall, a very nice piece that fills the late renaissance period from 1675 to 1765. As a side note, George Washington carried a Colichemarde during his tenure as a General in the Revolutionary War.

Firstly, as a fencer this is one of my favorite pieces I’ve ordered, the quality of the construction is very good having used it a while now, the scabbard is good and made with nice materials with a hanger to attach to belts, the blade has a tiny give in it as I would expect in any good rapier, the weight is light enough to actually use it properly, despite the nature of colichemardes being heavier than regular rapiers they’ve kept the weight low enough. The wrist guard, and pommel are pretty, the guard does not get in the way and is very sturdy, the wired hilt moves slightly during use, not enough to catch the skin but enough that I’d recommend gloves or it can become uncomfortable pretty quick, but with gloves it feels great and springy.
