The Italian Renaissance was a wild time. The period is typified by new art and music inspired by the aesthetics of ancient Rome, but it wasn’t just peaceful pursuits that called back to this ancient time — weapons of war also adopted a retro look at times that combined new design with old. The Cinquedea Sword is a prime example of that, an Italian Renaissance design that combines new forging and smithing techniques with a decidedly Ancient Roman aesthetic. With the word cinquedea meaning “five fingers”, our faithful reproduction of this iconic Italian Renaissance weapon takes its name from the width of its blade at the hilt, which has a strong taper to a point at the tip. Its curved guard and simple bone, brass, and steel hilt are design callbacks to the Roman Gladius, but this maneuverable and easily concealable short sword is forged with modern high carbon steel. Capped off with a gorgeous red leather-wrapped scabbard, the Cinquedea Sword makes a dramatic accent for any Renaissance cosplay.
