Quilted Arming Cap - Ecru

The Quilted Arming Cap in Ecru is a must-have for medieval helmet wearers, and it adds detail to historical and fantasy looks. This padded cap keeps your head comfortable under a helmet and offers light protection even on its own.

A foot soldier is never without the proper gear when fighting the enemy. The Aulber Canvas Gambeson is wonderful for the reenactor or LARPer looking for a medieval jacket. Available in three sizes and five colors, the gambeson uses ties and leather loops to close the jacket as well as uses ties to close the cuffs. Made of three layers, the jacket includes canvas and cotton while using wool felt for padding. It has long sleeves and slits under the armpits for better mobility. The waist length jacket is ideal for a Renaissance faire or historical stage fight.

This is a very good gambeson for the price.

    The pros:
You get a very solid and heavy piece of arming wear. It feels like it can take a blow, and you’ll be able to keep going.

The construction seems pretty sturdy, and if you have a stitching awl, you should be able to make repairs easily if/when needed.

You could easily use this for sparring practice and some HEMA. But check with safety marshals first.

    The cons:
The arms do not have an elbow bend built in. It will take some use and breaking in to get full mobility.

Sizing is really difficult with quilted gambesons. I’m glad I went with a L/XL option.

Unless you have a larger hauberk, don’t plan on wearing mail with this. The sleeves do not lend themselves to having the mail arms lay flat.

It might be possible with a smaller gambeson size, but I am glad I went with the sizing I did.

The leather ties are really flimsy garment suede. Fortunately, I’m a leatherworker, and I have plenty of heavy lace. I was able to replace the lacing and added extra tie rows to the gambeson. I might add purpointes later, but I’m not sure.

Overall, this was a great purchase!

This gambeson has a good weight to it, quite heavy out of the box, but you don’t notice the weight once you have it on. I agree with what another reviewer has said, the ties are just thin suede and I think they’ll get really worn with regular use. If you are a smaller person this gambeson might not work for you. I’m 5’6″, about 150lbs and I was drowning in my S/M…, particularly in the arms which were quite long.
Overall, I’m quite happy with this piece. Mytholon always has quality products and I should be able to tailor what I need to.
