The most important companion of a Crusader Knight is his shield. A Crusader shield served as the first line of defense for stopping the attacks of the enemy. Many Crusade shields displayed the symbols of the various knightly orders and other intricate designs. The Templars, Hospitalers, and Teutonic Knights all had some form of the cross, which was one of the most popular icons.
