The Cutlass was a short slashing sword, ideal for close quarter battles aboard ships. Generally regarded as a pirate weapon, the cutlass was, in fact, issued to the naval personnel of many countries, and this piece by Denix replicates a French naval style of the early 19th century. This short sword works well for maritime re-creations. The blade of this Denix sword is cast from a metal alloy and cannot be sharpened, making it safe for display in family environments.

This sword surprised me. I purchased it for a pirate costume and it not only fit perfectly with the outfit, it was a surprisingly comfortable and attractive piece. Due to the short blade and the heavy brass handle, it’s well-balanced just above the hilt and swings like a dream. It’s clean and attractive without looking like a glass display piece. Some swords look so nice they appear artificial. This one looked very clean but fits comfortably with a grungy pirate costume without standing out. I give it an A+.
